    Privacy notice

Swadnet collects as little personal information as it can. This notice says plainly what we collect, why, who helps us handle it, and how you can see it, correct it or have it removed. You do not need an account to browse the site.

    Who is responsible

Swadnet is run by Prem Devkota, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom. For data protection law he is the controller of the personal information described here.

For anything about your information, or anything else, write to info@swadnet.com.

    What we collect, and why

    • Browsing the site: no account is needed. We see aggregate, non identifying usage figures, and your network (IP) address briefly so we can limit abuse and spam and work out your approximate location, described below. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure and relevant service.
    • An account, if you create one: your email address and display name. Legal basis: performing our agreement with you.
    • Things you send us: contact form messages, reviews, community posts and any pictures attached, reports about a listing, and nominations. Legal basis: performing our agreement with you, and our legitimate interest in answering you.
    • Claiming or adding a business: the name, email address and phone number of the person making the claim, and the business details you give us. Legal basis: performing our agreement with you, and our legitimate interest in keeping listings accurate.
    • Enquiries to a business: if you send a message to a business through its listing, we pass your name, email address, phone number if given, and message to that business. Legal basis: performing your request.
    • The newsletter, if you subscribe: your email address. Legal basis: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time using the link in every issue.

    Your approximate location

Swadnet works out roughly where you are automatically, so that it can show you the right country and the Indian food nearest to you. Without this the site would show everyone the same page.

We do this from the network address your device connects from, which every website receives. It tells us your country, your region and usually your nearest city. It does not tell us your street or building, and it is sometimes a neighbouring city. We do not ask your device for its exact position, and we do not keep a record of where you were: the answer is used to choose what to show you and is held only in your own browser for that visit.

You can change the country at any time using the selector on the home page, and that choice is remembered on your device. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in showing you a relevant page.

    Birth details and beliefs

The personal calendar features are optional. If you choose to use them you may give us your date, time and place of birth, and optionally your gotra, ishta devata and kuldevata. Some of this can reveal religious belief or ethnic origin, which the law treats as especially sensitive.

We use it only to work out your personal calendar. We never use it for advertising, never sell it and never share it with other users. We hold it only because you chose to give it. You can have it deleted at any time by writing to us, and we will delete it within one month. Legal basis: your explicit consent.

    Business listings

Most listings on Swadnet start from OpenStreetMap, an open public map, and show details a business has already made public: its name, location, type of food and, where recorded, its address, phone number, website and opening hours. We show these so people can find the business. Legal basis: our legitimate interest and that of the public in a useful directory.

If you run a listed business, including as a sole trader, you can claim the listing, correct it or have it removed. Our listings policy explains how.

    Cookies and similar storage

We use only what the site needs to work: storage that keeps you signed in, and storage on your own device that remembers choices such as your country, your calendar tradition and saved filters. We do not use advertising or cross site tracking cookies.

If we introduce advertising in future, we will update this notice first and ask for your consent where the law requires it before any advertising cookie is set.

Who helps us handle your information

We do not sell personal information. We use these providers, each only for the purpose shown:

    • Supabase: the database, sign in and file storage, held in London.
    • Amazon Web Services: hosting and delivering the website, sending email, and running the AI models, in London.
    • Anthropic (Claude), through Amazon Web Services in London: checking community posts and reviews against our rules and drafting written content. Text you submit to those features is processed by the model. It is not used to train it.
    • Cloudflare: the domain name service, and forwarding of email sent to our addresses.
    • Google: the mailbox where our incoming email is read, and web fonts, which means Google sees your IP address when a page loads.
    • OpenAI: turning text into speech where a page offers audio.
    • Mapbox: showing maps.
    • Plausible: privacy friendly, cookie free usage statistics.

Some of these providers are based outside the United Kingdom. Where information leaves the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, it does so under the safeguards the law provides, such as adequacy decisions or approved contract terms.

    Automated checks

Reviews and community posts are checked by an automated system before they appear, so that abuse, spam and unlawful content are held back. If something of yours is held or refused and you think that is wrong, tell us and a person will look at it.

    How long we keep it

    • Account and personal calendar details: until you delete them or close your account.
    • Reviews and posts: until you delete them, or we remove them under our community rules.
    • Contact form messages and listing reports: while the matter is open, and deleted on request afterwards.
    • Newsletter address: until you unsubscribe.

    Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you the information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, stop using it or send you a copy. You can withdraw any consent you gave. You will not be treated any differently for doing so.

Write to info@swadnet.com. We answer within one month. We may need to confirm it is you before we act.

    • United Kingdom and European Economic Area: you can complain to your data protection authority. In the United Kingdom that is the Information Commissioner's Office, ico.org.uk.
    • India: you can use the same address to raise a grievance under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, and you may nominate another person to exercise your rights.
    • California and other United States states: we do not sell or share personal information for advertising, and you have the rights to know, correct and delete described above.

    Children

Accounts are for people aged 18 or over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger. If you believe a child has given us information, tell us and we will delete it.

    Changes

When this notice changes we will change the date at the top. If a change is significant we will say so on the site before it takes effect.
